Health Literacy

VNJ has taken a leadership role in raising awareness about the impact of low health literacy on both individuals and the health care system. Health care providers and public health educators from around the state attend our health literacy workshops that focus on ways to improve communication with low literate patients.

LVNJ has also created a two-hour workshop and resource guide for tutors interested in incorporating health literacy topics into their tutoring sessions.

Comments: Guide for Trainers

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know how pleased we are with the new curriculum Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey has offered.  In my opinion, this is one of the best investments this organization had made during my tenure. I found it concise, well organized, professional, well written, and user friendly. It keeps all of the tried and true techniques that we love about Literacy Volunteers intact. Your curriculum just organizes it in such a fashion that the volunteer trainee understands more easily.

- Program Director, Literacy Volunteers of Eastern Connecticut

Tutors and students alike come to our program with a wealth of knowledge. This training model makes it clear to volunteers that adult learners can build on their existing skills in listening, speaking, reading or writing while being tutored to speak English or read for the first time. Rather than feeling uncertain, this sequential training model gives new volunteers the assurance that, ‘I can tutor!’”

I couldn't wait to apply the techniques suggested during your presentation, mainly using the computer as a learning/teaching tool. The session was tailor-made for a situation I have with a student who only wants to learn to read so he can pass the driver's license exam. But I want him to reach higher. The manual that you passed out is so much easier to read than those thick manuals. I will take a three pronged approach with my student, hopefully simultaneously: Learn computer basics, learn to read, study for the exam on-line. I have an extra laptop which I will bring to class for his use.    Thanks for a great session.

Comments: Health Literacy for Tutors

I found your talk and handouts to be quite informative and, as a result of your encouragement, now include health literacy topics in my lessons on a regular basis....All of my students have enthusiastically responded to a health component to each class! In reviewing your materials with my students I discovered that many of them, even the most advanced, were incorrectly following dosage instructions for prescription and over-the-counter medications! The skills and knowledge that my students are developing will enable them to improve their health and the health of their families.
Victoria Lawer, Tutor, LV-Mercer County

Your presentation was informative and comprehensive. I learned so much and am highly motivated to use your materials with all of my students. It is critical that literacy classes include health literacy. Thank you so much.

This was excellent. It was well paced and just interactive enough to keep everyone involved. We will use a great deal of these resources in our conversation groups.
